Lawson Arena, Sports and swimming center at Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, US.
Lawson Arena is an indoor ice hockey facility at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan, built around a full-size ice surface. Metal benches arranged around the rink offer seating for around 3,600 spectators who look directly down onto the ice.
The arena opened in 1974, funded by Harry Lawson, whose contribution made it possible for the university to field its first college hockey team. His support gave the program a home from its very beginning.
A student fan group called the Lawson Lunatics gathers in the stands during hockey games and makes a lot of noise. Their chants and energy shape how every game feels for anyone sitting nearby.
The arena sits on the main campus of Western Michigan University and is easy to reach on foot from the central buildings. Parking is available in the surrounding campus lots, which makes arriving by car straightforward.
In 1987, nearly 5,200 people packed the arena for a Championship Hockey Association game between Western Michigan and Michigan State, far beyond its normal seating capacity. That night remains the most attended event in the building's history.
