Linoma Beach, Historic district in Sarpy County, Nebraska, United States.
Linoma Beach is a historic district in Sarpy County located on the eastern bank of the Platte River in Nebraska. The site features an artificial lake and a lighthouse approximately 100 feet tall that was constructed in 1939.
The area began in 1907 as a sand and gravel mining operation by the Lyman-Richey Sand Company, whose extraction activities created spring-fed lakes. The transformation into a public recreation park occurred later and represented a significant shift in how the land was used.
The site became a recreation destination starting in 1924, featuring swimming facilities and hosting dance and music events that drew crowds from the surrounding region. These activities made it a significant social gathering place for people seeking entertainment and outdoor leisure.
The site sits directly adjacent to U.S. Route 6, making it easily accessible with Gretna located about 7 miles northeast and good connections between Omaha and Lincoln. Visitors can expect straightforward road access and should plan accordingly based on proximity to this major highway.
The lighthouse, despite standing far from any ocean, represents an unusual example of roadside design from the early 1900s that was built to attract travelers. Its presence on an inland lake shows how operators creatively used unexpected architectural features to draw visitors to the site.
