Construction took place in 1725, and the house served as the birthplace and childhood residence of Joseph Hewes, a future signer of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The building experienced fire damage leading to reconstruction in 1735, with a connecting kitchen addition completed around 1753.
The interior preserves original Georgian elements including exposed wooden beams, detailed paneling, and a central hall plan with a full-depth parlor.
