William Flemer Sr. established Princeton Nurseries in 1913, selecting Kingston for its stone-free loam soil and strategic location between New York and Philadelphia.
The former sales building, constructed in 1917 and renovated in Colonial Revival style during the 1960s, now serves as the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park office.
The preserved 214-acre complex contains cold storage buildings, a propagation house, and several greenhouses connected to educational and interpretive facilities.
Princeton Nurseries developed numerous plant patents, including the Princeton American Elm variety, during its tenure as the largest commercial nursery in the United States.
