The Mohegan Bluffs rise 200 feet above the Atlantic Ocean, featuring layers of sedimentary rocks that form steep walls along the southeast coast.
In the mid-16th century, these cliffs witnessed a battle where the Niantic tribe defeated the Mohegan tribe, leading to their fall from the edge.
The Southeast Lighthouse near the cliffs stands as a maritime symbol, with its beam reaching 22 miles across the water to guide vessels.
A wooden staircase with 141 steps leads visitors from the parking area through the natural landscape down to the rocky beach below.
The erosion of these cliffs prompted the relocation of the Southeast Lighthouse 60 feet inland in 1993 to prevent its collapse.
