Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Wildlife refuge in Dakota County, Minnesota
The Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge spans 14,000 acres along the Minnesota River, featuring prairies, wetlands, forests, and numerous lakes with diverse wildlife populations.
This protected area was established in 1976 following concerns about development near the Minnesota River, with subsequent expansion to include multiple units across 70 miles.
Two education centers within the refuge provide exhibits, art galleries, and educational programs that connect visitors with local wildlife and natural heritage.
The Bloomington Education Center opens Wednesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 5 PM, offering access to hiking trails, bird watching stations, and equipment lending.
The refuge contains the Old Cedar Avenue Bridge from 1920, which spans Long Meadow Lake and serves as a reminder of historical transportation infrastructure.
