Motor Row District, Historic automobile district in Near South Side, Chicago, US
The district extends along Michigan Avenue between 2200 and 2500 south, featuring commercial buildings that represent early automobile commerce in the United States.
Between 1905 and 1936, the district developed into a central location where 116 different automobile manufacturers, including Ford, Buick, and Cadillac, established their showrooms.
Notable architects Holabird & Roche, Alfred Alschuler, and Albert Kahn designed many buildings in Early Commercial and Mission Revival architectural styles for this district.
The district currently houses one remaining car dealership, Fiat/Alfa Romeo, while other buildings transform into condominiums, nightclubs, and retail spaces.
The district served as headquarters for The Chicago Defender newspaper and Chess Records, where numerous blues musicians recorded their songs.
