Mirror Lake State Park

Mirror Lake State Park is a natural preserve spanning about 2,000 acres in Sauk County, ringed by tall sandstone bluffs. The water body at its center stays remarkably still, creating reflective surfaces that double the visual depth of the surrounding forest and rock formations.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources established this park in 1962 to protect the region's natural features and offer recreational access. The creation reflected broader conservation efforts to preserve Wisconsin's lakes and distinctive sandstone landscapes.

The park integrates into the regional outdoor recreation system, connecting visitors with Wisconsin's natural heritage through educational programs and guided activities.

The park features three campgrounds—Sandstone Ridge, Bluewater Bay, and Cliffwood—with both electrical and non-electrical sites operating from May through October. Plan ahead during warmer months when facilities are fully open and visitation peaks.

The lake exhibits a remarkable optical effect when its surface is perfectly still—the water creates a mirror-like reflection that doubles the visual impression of the surrounding cliffs and trees. This striking quality is what inspired the park's name and continues to captivate visitors.
