Riverside and Great Northern Railway, Heritage miniature railway in Wisconsin Dells, United States.
The Riverside and Great Northern Railway is a miniature train operation in Wisconsin Dells featuring narrow-gauge tracks that wind through the landscape for several miles. The route passes through canyon terrain near the Wisconsin River with changing views along the way.
The operation began in Janesville and moved to Wisconsin Dells in 1952, establishing its base there. It reused the former right-of-way from an older railroad that once connected La Crosse and Milwaukee.
The railway builds its locomotives using time-honored construction methods, creating engines that serve duty at zoos across the country. Visitors witness the hands-on craftsmanship that keeps this miniature operation running.
Train rides operate from May through October, with special seasonal trains running in early December. Bring layers or a jacket since the open or semi-open cars expose passengers to the elements.
The preservation group acquired steam locomotive number 82 through a trade with Milwaukee County Zoo and restored it to working order. This engine had previously served at the zoo before being rescued and returned to rail duty.
