Witches Gulch

Witches Gulch is a sandstone canyon with narrow passages carved by water and wind into steep rock walls. These corridors rise steeply on both sides, creating a confined walkway through the formations.

The Wisconsin Dells region served as important territory for Native American communities long before European settlement arrived. The area transformed into a popular tourism destination during the 19th century with organized boat tours and pathways.

The name draws from local folklore about supernatural beings believed to inhabit the canyon. Tour guides weave these stories into their narration while traveling through the river passages.

Access requires boarding a river tour boat that includes scheduled stops for walking through the canyon passages. Wear sturdy shoes since the pathways can be wet and slippery from water.

Hidden whirlpools form in the narrowest sections where air temperatures drop noticeably cooler than outside the canyon. This natural phenomenon results from the tight overhead openings and water circulation patterns.
