Dells of the Wisconsin River, Sandstone canyon in Wisconsin, United States

The Dells of the Wisconsin River is a sandstone canyon where the river carves through deep rock walls reaching about 100 feet in height along its meandering path. The exposed stone layers reveal different geological periods and create a dramatic natural corridor that spans several miles.

This canyon was carved by the Wisconsin River over millions of years, with the current shape taking form after glaciers retreated roughly 15,000 years ago. The river's continuous flow gradually sculpted the dramatic rock walls visible today.

Native American tribes inhabited the area for generations, utilizing the river system for transportation and establishing settlements along its banks.

The best way to see the canyon is by boat tour, which offers views of the rock walls from the water level and allows access to sections unreachable by land. Spring through fall is the ideal season to visit when water levels are suitable for navigation.

Deep recesses in the rock walls receive so little natural light that specialized lichens and mosses thrive there in near-total darkness. These shadowed cracks preserve conditions similar to the ice age and shelter organisms found nowhere else in the region.
