National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility, American BSL-4 research facility
The National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility is a research building in Manhattan, Kansas, designed to study diseases that threaten animals and food systems. The structure covers over 570,000 square feet and contains specialized containment systems capable of safely handling the most dangerous pathogens at Biosafety Level 4.
Planning for this facility began around two decades ago as a replacement for the smaller Plum Island research center in New York. After an extensive site selection process, Manhattan was chosen in 2009, and construction started in 2015, completing in 2023 despite pandemic-related delays.
The facility represents a national commitment to protecting farming and food systems from disease outbreaks. It symbolizes how communities work together on projects that safeguard both livestock and public health.
The facility is accessible only to authorized research personnel and requires security clearances due to the nature of work conducted there. General public access is restricted, though the building is located in Manhattan and visible as part of the regional infrastructure.
This was the first Biosafety Level 4 laboratory on the mainland United States capable of working with large farm animals, representing a major technical achievement. This capability allows researchers to study diseases that directly threaten livestock, providing protection for the nation's food supply.
