National Golf Links of America, Private golf course in Southampton, United States
National Golf Links of America is a private golf course in Southampton on the coast of Long Island. The layout runs across rolling ground with deep bunkers, natural hazards, and views of Peconic Bay.
Charles B. Macdonald designed the course in 1907, creating one of the first true links layouts in North America, which opened in 1908. He studied classic Scottish courses beforehand to recreate their features on American soil.
The clubhouse holds a large collection of golf equipment and records that show how the sport grew in America. Visitors who gain entry can see trophies, old clubs, and photographs from more than a century.
Entry requires an invitation from a member, as this is a private club with strict access rules. Those who receive an invitation should follow standard golf etiquette and the club's dress code.
Several holes are exact replicas of famous Scottish golf holes, including the Redan from North Berwick and the Alps from Prestwick. Macdonald traveled to Scotland to survey the originals and study their contours.
