Owls Head Light, Historic lighthouse in Knox County, United States.
Owls Head Light is a brick lighthouse located in Knox County, Maine, built on a granite foundation near the coast. The tower rises about 9 meters above ground and features a white exterior with a black lantern room at its top.
The lighthouse was first established in 1825 to guide ships along the Maine coast. A complete rebuilding in 1852 replaced it with a new cylindrical brick tower on a granite base.
The American Lighthouse Foundation maintains this navigational structure, preserving maritime heritage through educational programs and guided visits.
The lighthouse sits within a state park offering walking trails and views of Penobscot Bay from various overlooks. The site is most accessible during warmer months when weather conditions are favorable and pathways are well-maintained.
The lighthouse houses one of Maine's few remaining operational Fresnel lenses, which sits approximately 30 meters above sea level. This 19th-century optical device remains functional and is carefully maintained as a piece of maritime engineering history.
