Knox County, County seat in Mid Coast, Maine, US

Knox County stretches along Penobscot Bay and includes about 15 towns and cities, with Camden, Rockland, and Thomaston being the largest. The territory spans mainland areas and numerous islands scattered offshore.

This region was established in 1860 when it separated from parts of Lincoln and Waldo counties. Rockland was designated as its administrative center from the beginning.

The region's identity is rooted in maritime work and fishing, visible in the active waterfronts where boats still serve local communities and galleries display coastal heritage.

The airport in Owls Head offers regular flights, while ferries connect the mainland to Vinalhaven and North Haven islands. Getting around the area is straightforward with these main transportation options available.

The region includes about twenty inhabited islands scattered throughout Penobscot Bay, making it one of Maine's most island-filled administrative areas. This archipelago deeply shapes how people live and move around here.
