North Haven, Island town in Knox County, United States.
North Haven sits on an island in Penobscot Bay, roughly twenty kilometers from the mainland city of Rockland in Maine's midcoast region. The town is accessible only by ferry and has around 355 year-round residents.
The town separated from the neighboring island of Vinalhaven in 1846 and became independent. From that point forward, it developed as its own maritime community with separate governance.
Residents here work with the ocean through fishing and boat building, while some tend small gardens and produce local crafts. These activities shape how people live and connect with their surroundings every day.
Access is by ferry only from Rockland, with several departures each day. The town is small enough to explore on foot, with limited shops and services.
This place is one of only fourteen unbridged island communities in Maine. The isolation created by water shapes a way of life centered on ferry connections.
