Goose Rocks Light, Lighthouse in Penobscot Bay, Maine, US

Goose Rocks Light is a cast iron lighthouse standing 15.5 meters above the water at the eastern entrance of Fox Islands Thoroughfare, connecting North Haven with Vinalhaven. The structure spans four levels and preserves the former keeper's living quarters on its second level.

The structure was built in 1890 using materials from Boston and Crotch Island and operated initially with a fifth-order Fresnel lens. The lighting system was later converted to a flashing white light with a red sector to guide vessels through the passage.

The lighthouse functioned as a station for male keepers who worked and lived there without their families due to space constraints. This isolation shaped the lives of those dedicated to guiding ships safely through the waterway.

The lighthouse is accessible to overnight visitors across all four levels and provides close views of maritime operations in the passage. Visitors should prepare for narrow stairs and limited space within the tower, as the structure preserves its historical layout.

The lighthouse was built directly in the water near Fox Islands rather than on land, making construction significantly more challenging. Its complete preservation for overnight stays makes it a rare opportunity to sleep inside a working navigational structure.
