Grindel Point Light, Maritime navigation tower in Islesboro, Maine, US
Grindel Point Light is a brick lighthouse rising approximately 40 feet above Gilkey Harbor with a square tapered design. A covered passageway connects the tower to the adjacent keeper's residence, forming a unified maritime complex.
Congress authorized funding in 1849 for construction, with the original tower and keeper's house completed shortly after. The initial optical system was installed in 1856 and served maritime navigation for more than a century.
The keeper's house now holds a museum dedicated to maritime heritage, reflecting the island's connection to seafaring life. Visitors can explore local maritime traditions and the town's role as a harbor community.
Ferry service connects Lincolnville Beach to Islesboro, with the lighthouse situated near the ferry terminal for easy access. Once on the island, the site is best explored on foot, and the surrounding area offers walking paths.
A modern solar-powered LED system has been in use since 2017, replacing the original optical equipment from over 150 years ago. This technological upgrade demonstrates how historic structures adapt to contemporary navigation methods while maintaining their original form.
