Surprise

The Surprise is a historic sailing vessel measuring 44 feet in length with a 12-foot beam, featuring oak and locust framing combined with yellow pine and mahogany planking. The deck incorporates fir wood construction alongside a motor chamber in the rear section.

Naval architect Thomas F McManus designed this racing schooner in 1917 for M.S. Kattenhorn, a merchandise broker from New Rochelle, New York. The vessel underwent major changes throughout the 20th century before being converted for public sailing excursions.

The vessel maintains four traditional sails that represent the classic design of early 20th-century American sailing craft. This construction reflects a maritime heritage that locals still connect with today.
