Project Puffin

Project Puffin is a seabird conservation program along Maine's coast that oversees seven islands in the Gulf of Maine. Biologists work there to protect Atlantic Puffins and other seabirds during nesting season and study their behavior.

The project was founded in 1973 by the National Audubon Society to restore Atlantic Puffins that disappeared from Maine during the 1800s due to hunting. Restoration efforts started on the islands and have expanded since then.

The Visitor Center in Rockland displays exhibits and live camera feeds showing how seabirds nest and live on the islands. Visitors can watch the daily work of researchers and learn about efforts to protect these animals.

Visitors can tour the Visitor Center in Rockland, where live footage from the islands is displayed. The best time to visit is during nesting season, when bird activity is highest.

Researchers use decoys, mirrors, and sound recordings on Eastern Egg Rock to attract puffins and encourage their return. These methods have proven effective in restoring populations.
