Panorama Resort, Hotel in den Vereinigten Staaten
Panorama Resort was a hotel located on a mountaintop near Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, overlooking the Blue Ridge Mountains and valleys below. The complex included a main hotel building, bungalows, a tea room, golf and tennis facilities, and various recreational amenities for guests.
The resort was built in the early 1920s and opened on July 20, 1924, on the Blue Ridge ridgeline. After Shenandoah National Park was established, the federal government took the land through eminent domain and demolished the main hotel in 1958 to make space for road development.
The name Panorama refers to the expansive mountain and valley views that guests could enjoy from the resort. The rustic building design was intentionally created to blend with the natural surroundings and offer visitors a relaxed place to spend time.
The site sits along Skyline Drive between Sperryville and Luray and was a convenient stopping point for travelers exploring the area or resting from their drives. Visitors can still visit the open area today to enjoy the far-reaching views, though no historical structures remain.
The resort was famous for its bear shows, a popular form of entertainment at the time where visitors could feed animals kept in cages. An incident in which a guest was attacked by a bear led to a lawsuit, but the attractions remained until the 1930s when the Civilian Conservation Corps moved the bears away.
