This ten-story building completed in 1914 features a steel frame and limestone exterior that conveys classical style typical of early 20th-century commercial architecture.
The building was constructed in 1914 for the Paine Furniture Company, a business founded in 1835 that grew into one of New England's largest furniture manufacturers and retailers. After the company sold the building in 1989, it was repurposed for various commercial and educational uses.
The building carries the name of the Paine Furniture Company, which operated its business here for many years. The solid stone construction reflects how early 20th-century commerce valued quality materials and skilled workmanship.
The building is located in Boston's Back Bay area and is easily accessible on foot from surrounding streets. The large windows and open interior layout make it possible to observe the historic architecture from both outside and within the spaces.
The building was designed by renowned architects Densmore and LeClear, who created many notable structures across Boston and surrounding areas during the early 20th century. Today it remains on the National Register of Historic Places and houses part of Suffolk University's art and design program.
