Pigeon Swamp State Park, National Natural Landmark and state park in South Brunswick, New Jersey.
Pigeon Swamp State Park is a protected natural area spanning about 1,078 acres with open ponds, wetlands, and hardwood forests within the Lawrence Brook watershed of Middlesex County. The park maintains marked walking paths that guide visitors through these distinct natural habitats.
The land was owned by Ann Pidgeon in the 18th century, and in 1780 workers began the Great Ditch project to drain the swamp for farming. These early efforts shaped the landscape for generations before protection was established.
The park functions as a refuge where visitors watch native wildlife including kestrels, red-tailed hawks, and white-tailed deer living in natural habitats. Walking the marked trails reveals how different species depend on the wetlands and forests here.
Visitors must wear orange clothing during hunting seasons when deer hunting is permitted in the park. Staying on marked paths and being aware of hunting activity helps ensure a safe visit.
A large lake was created in 1945 through dredging operations by Dallenbach Sand Company and remains visible from Deans Rhode Hall Road. This artificial waterbody has become an unexpected part of the park's landscape, adding habitat for waterfowl.
