REO Town, Historic district in Ingham County, United States.
REO Town is a historic district in Lansing containing industrial and residential buildings built across different decades, beginning with the area's automotive manufacturing era. The neighborhood spans multiple blocks with a mix of older homes, small shops, and art galleries distributed throughout.
The district takes its name from the REO Motor Car Company founded by Ransom Eli Olds, which built automobiles in the area during the early 1900s. This manufacturing presence sparked the growth of residential neighborhoods designed for workers employed by the factory.
The neighborhood drew workers and their families who built community life together across different professions and social backgrounds. This mixed workforce character remains visible in how the residential buildings and streets are organized around shared spaces.
The district sits in central Lansing and is easy to explore on foot, with numerous small shops and galleries within walking distance. Visitors should allow time to see both the older buildings and the newer art spaces scattered throughout the different streets.
The area includes the REO Club House, which opened in 1917 and hosted concerts, educational programs, and social events for the worker community. This venue served as the social center where people from different backgrounds could gather and connect together.
