Walter French Academy

Walter French Academy is a three-story school building located at the intersection of Mount Hope Avenue and Cedar Street in Lansing. The structure occupies approximately six acres and reflects the educational building design standards of the 1920s era.

Architect Judson N. Churchill designed the building in 1925 to address overcrowding caused by Lansing's rapid population growth during the automotive industry expansion. The facility initially served as a combined elementary and middle school before converting to middle school use alone.

The building reflects early 20th-century educational design with its three-story structure built to accommodate changing student needs. Visitors can observe how the spaces were adapted multiple times to serve different age groups and learning approaches over the decades.

The building sits at an easily accessible intersection of two major roads in central Lansing. Note that the Capital Area Housing Partnership acquired the property in 2018 with plans to convert the space into residential units, so the site may look different than historical photos.

After closing as a regular school in 1981, the building reopened in 1996 as a specialized charter school focused on business and technology education. This transformation shows how older school buildings can be repurposed to serve new educational missions and student interests.
