The Walter French Academy spans three stories and occupies six acres at the intersection of Mount Hope Avenue and Cedar Street.
Local architect Judson N. Churchill designed the school in 1925 to address student overcrowding caused by Lansing's population growth during the automotive industry boom.
The building served different educational purposes over time, starting as a combined elementary and junior high before transitioning to exclusively junior high education in 1950.
The Capital Area Housing Partnership acquired the property in 2018 with plans to transform the former educational facility into residential units.
After its closure as a traditional school in 1981, the building reopened in 1996 as a specialized charter institution focusing on business and technology education.
