Rifle Sport Gallery, Alternative art gallery in downtown Minneapolis, US
Rifle Sport Gallery was an art space housed in a three-level underground setting within Block E on Hennepin Avenue in Minneapolis. The venue displayed experimental works and hosted performance art in this unconventional exhibition space.
The gallery was founded in 1985 by artist Colleen Barnett in a former arcade building on Hennepin Avenue. The space closed in 1988 when the Block E area was redeveloped and the building was demolished.
The space served as a gathering place for artists and musicians working outside the mainstream. Visitors could encounter experimental art and live performances that shaped the local creative scene.
The underground setting was somewhat hidden, situated below street level and required visitors to descend to reach the entrance. After closure at its original location, the venue briefly relocated near Loring Park before permanently shutting down.
The gallery hosted musical bands like The Slime Clowns alongside displaying works by local emerging artists. This pairing of live music with visual art exhibitions was unusual for the Minneapolis scene at that time.
