Republican River Pegram Truss, bridge in United States of America
The Republican River Pegram Truss is a steel bridge that spans the Republican River in Cloud County and runs along Route 190th Road. The structure measures approximately 461 feet (140 meters) in total length, with the main span crossing the river at about 200 feet (61 meters), and the roadway is about 14 feet (4 meters) wide.
The structure was built in 1893 by Edge Moor Bridge Works from Delaware and originally served as a railroad bridge. It is possible that the bridge was moved from another location, possibly Wyoming, to this site for railway use.
The bridge is named after the engineer whose truss design was applied here, a system rarely seen in this region. It shows how steel was used at a time when this material represented a new solution for large structures.
The structure sits in a rural area with open fields and little nearby development, offering clear views of the structure. Since the bridge is no longer used for regular traffic, visitors should check if crossing is permitted before approaching the site.
The structure combines two different truss types in one place: the Pegram system and a triple-intersection lattice framework, a combination rarely found in the area. A steel marking on an eyebar indicates the steel came from the Cambria steel mill, a detail rarely preserved on historic steel structures.
