Rockford Morning Star Building
Rockford Morning Star Building, Registered office building in Rockford, United States.
The Rockford Morning Star Building is an office structure in Rockford, Illinois, featuring Classical Revival design. Terra cotta covers its exterior walls, divided by pilasters topped with ornate capitals, and it stands at 127 N. Wyman Street.
Architects Clausen, Kruse & Klein built it between 1927 and 1928 as the headquarters for the Rockford Morning Star newspaper. It earned National Register of Historic Places designation in 1999 and became part of the West Downtown Rockford Historic District in 2007.
The entrance displays Art Deco and Egyptian design elements through decorative panels featuring chevron patterns and lotus bud motifs. These ornamental details reflect the decorative tastes that were fashionable during the 1920s.
It sits near downtown and is easily reached on foot, especially when exploring the Wyman Street corridor. Being a historic building, the exterior is visible from the street, though interior access may be limited or restricted.
Pioneer Life Insurance Company acquired it in 1946 and operated offices there until moving to Schaumburg in 1993. This lengthy occupancy shows how it transitioned from newspaper to insurance operations over several decades.
