Tinker Swiss Cottage, Swiss-style cottage museum in Rockford, Illinois, US.
Tinker Swiss Cottage is a 19th-century house in Rockford, Illinois, built on a limestone ridge above a creek. The building draws on Swiss architectural forms and Victorian detailing across around 27 rooms on two floors.
Robert Hall Tinker had the house built between 1865 and 1870 after traveling through Europe, where Swiss architecture left a strong impression on him. He wanted the design to carry those memories into his home in Illinois.
The rooms inside still hold the original furnishings the Tinker family used day to day, from chairs to decorative objects. Walking through them gives a clear sense of how a prosperous Midwestern family arranged their home in the late 1800s.
The house is open only at certain times, so it is worth checking when tours are available before you go. Capacity can be limited, so planning ahead makes the visit easier.
The main staircase inside was carved from a single piece of walnut wood, which is rare for a structure of this size. This single piece of wood gives the staircase a continuity that is hard to miss once you know to look for it.
