The Rivoli Theater is a Spanish Mission Revival style movie house built in the 1920s with expansive interior spaces decorated with ornamental details. The building features an extensive stage designed to accompany film screenings with live music and effects.
The theater opened in 1927 as an advanced entertainment venue in a growing neighborhood. It remained in operation for over 60 years, serving as an important place for film culture during that era in Indianapolis.
The theater served as a gathering place for people from the east side of Indianapolis, where neighbors met to watch films and enjoy entertainment together. It represents an era when movie houses were important social centers in the city.
The building is currently closed and located on East 10th Street in the east side of the city. Visitors should note that access is not available at this time while preservation professionals work on future restoration plans.
The theater was among the first to show sound films in Indiana, making it a significant place for film technology advancement. A pipe organ played during screenings to create a complete entertainment experience for audiences.
