Linwood Colonial Apartments
Linwood Colonial Apartments, Residential complex in Indianapolis, United States.
Linwood Colonial Apartments is a residential complex in Indianapolis made up of three three-story red brick buildings with symmetrical facades, containing 106 units total. The development spans 3.6 acres and includes one U-shaped building plus two structures with stepped floor plans.
Construction occurred between 1937 and 1938 under architects Pierre & Wright and the Moynahan Apartment Organization, marking an important period for urban housing design. The complex was later recognized by the National Register of Historic Places in 2006 for its architectural significance.
This residential complex represents 1930s ideals about urban living, where architects designed garden apartments to make city housing more livable and pleasant. The layout shows how designers wanted to bring open space and greenery into neighborhood development.
The complex sits at the corner of East Washington Street and South Linwood Avenue in an accessible urban location. Walking through the grounds gives you a good sense of 1930s residential neighborhood design and layout.
The site showcases an unusual architectural arrangement where a U-shaped building works together with two offset structures to create multiple courtyards and green spaces. This thoughtful design still makes the spaces feel open and connected despite the residential density.
