Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge

Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge is a protected coastal area in Rhode Island with salt marshes, grasslands, and rocky shorelines. The 800 acre property stretches along the Atlantic coast and contains distinct habitats that support diverse wildlife populations.

The refuge was established in 1970 to protect coastal lands that faced environmental threats. Designation as a federal sanctuary enabled the preservation of natural processes and wildlife species in the region.

The refuge serves as an educational center where visitors learn about wildlife conservation through guided programs and interpretive exhibits at the visitor center.

The refuge is open from sunrise to sunset with nearly three miles of trails available for exploring. Parking areas, restrooms, and observation platforms provide convenient facilities for visitors throughout the property.

The site hosts a significant winter population of harlequin ducks from November through March when birds migrate south. These diving ducks are rarely seen in such numbers along much of the Atlantic coast.
