Sand Island Light, Historic lighthouse on Sand Island, Lake Superior, Wisconsin, US
The stone lighthouse features an octagonal tower attached to a two-story dwelling, built from brown sandstone extracted from the surrounding promontory.
Construction started in June 1881 after Congress allocated $18,000, with the first illumination taking place on September 25 of the same year.
The building incorporates Gothic Revival elements, marking the first use of sandstone instead of brick in lighthouse construction in the Great Lakes region.
The National Park Service offers guided tours of the lighthouse during summer months between noon and 4 PM, accessible by private boat or kayak.
Keeper Charles Lederle performed a notable rescue in 1885, rowing through high waves to save the crew of the burning steamer Prussia.
