Apostle Islands Lighthouses, Historic lighthouse complex in Ashland County, US
The Apostle Islands contain eight separate lighthouses constructed between 1856 and 1929, forming a navigation system across Lake Superior's waters.
The establishment of the Soo Locks in 1855 increased vessel traffic in Lake Superior, leading to the construction of multiple lighthouses for maritime safety.
These lighthouses represent the determination of early maritime communities, with lighthouse keepers and their families maintaining these beacons through extreme conditions.
The National Park Service provides seasonal guided tours to several lighthouses, allowing visitors to explore the towers and keeper's quarters from June through September.
Michigan Island features two lighthouse towers, resulting from an 1880 structure being dismantled in Pennsylvania and reconstructed on the island in 1929.
