School for Creative and Performing Arts, Cincinnati, Ohio arts school
The School for Creative and Performing Arts is a public school in Cincinnati offering instruction in seven artistic disciplines: dance, acting, singing, writing, visual arts, technical theater, and music. The building contains three theaters and specialized rooms where students practice, train, and display their work daily.
The school opened in 1973 as part of a plan to make education fairer for all children. It started in Mount Adams, then moved to various historic buildings in the city before settling in Over-the-Rhine, where a new building complex opened in 2010.
The school occupies a space in Over-the-Rhine, a neighborhood with German roots that changed significantly over time. Today it brings energy to the area through student performances and art projects that enliven the community and give young artists a place to create and share their work.
The school educates students from kindergarten through grade 12 as part of the Cincinnati Public Schools system. Younger students are admitted through a lottery system, while older students must audition to join one of the seven artistic programs before they can enroll.
The school stages nearly 300 performances each year, an extraordinary frequency for a school institution. This constant activity means visitors walking through the building during school hours are likely to encounter rehearsals, concerts, or productions in progress.
