Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area

Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area spans 10,360 acres of floodplain lakes, sloughs, bottomland forests, and prairie at the junction of Illinois and Sangamon rivers.

The state of Illinois acquired the initial 2,700 acres from Sanganois Gun Club in 1948, followed by additional land purchases in 1957, 1964, and 1970.

The site functions as a vital public hunting ground with 60 waterfowl blind sites and 7,000 acres dedicated to seasonal deer and waterfowl hunting activities.

Visitors access the main check station 8 miles northwest of Chandlerville off Route 78, with an additional boat ramp located 1.5 miles northeast of Browning.

The protected area contains three designated waterfowl refuges: Barkhausen Refuge, Ash Swale Waterfowl Refuge, and Marion-Pickerel Waterfowl Refuge.
