Shelbyville State Fish and Wildlife Area, Wildlife conservation area in Moultrie County, Illinois.
Shelbyville State Fish and Wildlife Area is a protected zone spanning roughly 6,200 acres along the Kaskaskia and West Okaw rivers. The landscape contains forests, grasslands, wetlands, and streams that together create diverse habitats.
The area was established by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources as part of the larger Lake Shelbyville project. That project aimed to manage flooding while creating habitat for wildlife.
The area functions as a learning space where people can discover local ecosystems and wildlife protection in action. Visitors observe how habitats are managed and restored for the animals that live here.
The area provides six boat launches with designated zones for hunting, fishing, and bird watching. Visitors should familiarize themselves with access rules beforehand, as different activities occur in different sections.
The protected zone is divided into two distinct units with different characteristics: the Kaskaskia Unit and the West Okaw Unit. Each section attracts different wildlife and offers different experiences for visitors.
