Shelter Rock

Shelter Rock is a massive granite formation in Manhasset created by glacial action during the ice age. The boulder sits on private property and features a natural protective overhang that provides shelter underneath.

This granite boulder was transported and deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago during the ice age. Its arrival here marks one of the major geological events that shaped the Long Island landscape.

The Matinecock people used this rock as a gathering and shelter site, leaving traces of their presence over many centuries. It remains a physical connection to the indigenous history of the area.

The rock sits on private property, so access is limited and visitors should respect the boundaries of the estate. The upper portion is visible from Shelter Rock Road, offering views even without entering the grounds.

This formation was officially designated as a Town Landmark in 2007, recognizing both its geological and cultural importance. This protection ensures it remains a documented part of the region's natural heritage.
