Sno*Drift, Winter rally competition in Montmorency County, Michigan, United States
Sno*Drift is a winter rally competition that spans 118 miles of competition on snow and ice-covered forest roads over two days. The event takes place in February and features intense racing across challenging terrain with stages that vary throughout the route.
The event started in 1973 near Grayling when Erhard Dahm and John Campbell won the inaugural race in a Jeep Wagoneer. From this modest beginning, it grew into an established winter driving test in Michigan.
Local residents and businesses create Bonfire Alley, where spectators maintain fires along five miles of the race route as a community tradition that brings people together.
Studded tires are not allowed under Michigan state regulations, so drivers must develop specialized techniques for the slippery conditions. Visitors should bring warm clothing and be ready for changing weather, as the event moves quickly across different sections of the route.
The location near three Great Lakes creates highly variable winter conditions, from lake effect snow to sheet ice, making each section of the track different. This forces drivers to constantly adjust their driving techniques as they progress through the stages.
