South Park Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in Monongalia County, West Virginia
South Park Historic District is a neighborhood in Morgantown, West Virginia, covering roughly 86 acres and made up mainly of houses built close together on a hillside. Most of its more than 500 buildings were built between 1900 and 1940 and show architectural styles from that era, ranging from Craftsman Bungalows to Colonial Revival.
The district became officially part of Morgantown starting in 1901 and was planned from the beginning as a neighborhood for wealthier families seeking order and quiet. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places to preserve its architecture and history for future generations.
The name South Park refers to its location south of downtown Morgantown. The houses sit close together with front porches and small yards, typical of how neighborhoods were built in that era. The district shows how people lived and maintained their homes over a century ago.
The district sits just south of downtown Morgantown and is easy to reach on foot, with quiet streets that invite walking. The close arrangement of houses makes it possible to see much of the architecture and design details in a relatively short time.
The district was designed with strict building rules that required houses to be two stories tall and have slate or tile roofs, making it one of the city's first planned neighborhoods. This early urban planning helped preserve the neighborhood's character for over a century.
