Sparks, unincorporated community in Baltimore County, Maryland
Sparks is a small community in northern Baltimore County, Maryland, about 20 miles north of Baltimore. The area features open fields, rolling hills, and the Gunpowder River, which is accessed by the North Central Railroad Hike-Bike Trail that runs through the region.
Sparks originated in 1835 with the railroad line that created a stop called 'Sparks' Switch', later shortened to Sparks. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln's body was transported through this location on its way to Illinois, marking a significant moment in the community's history.
Sparks took its name from a railroad stop called 'Sparks' Switch' in the 1800s, and the shortened name stuck over time. The community keeps this railroad heritage alive through old buildings and stories that visitors notice while walking through the area.
Access to Sparks is via Interstate 83, with Exit 24 serving as the main entrance to the community. The North Central Railroad Hike-Bike Trail offers visitors a good starting point for exploration and is easily accessible on foot, by bike, or for jogging.
An early 20th-century bank building still stands today and now houses a center for children's activities. This preserved building shows how the location once served as a business hub along the railroad line.
