St. John's Episcopal Church, Gothic Revival church in downtown Fayetteville, United States
St. John's Episcopal Church is a Gothic Revival church building in downtown Fayetteville with two main steeples and four smaller ones. The interior extends with a central aisle and two side aisles, with a gallery spanning the back and sides of the nave.
Construction of the present building started in 1832 after a major fire in 1831 destroyed the original structure and many other downtown buildings. This rebuilding was part of the city's recovery following that disaster.
The stained glass windows inside depict biblical scenes and depictions of saints, which visitors encounter while moving through the space. These visual elements shape the experience of walking through the building and draw attention upward.
The interior accommodates about 350 people with divided pews in different areas. The gallery and multiple aisles provide different ways to explore the space and move through it.
A mahogany pipe organ sits in the gallery and is played during services by choir members. This instrument creates a complete sound landscape that fills the entire space.
