Star City Bridge, Road bridge in Star City, West Virginia, US
The Star City Bridge is a road bridge spanning the Monongahela River, connecting Star City with Interstate 79 by way of US Route 19. The structure carries five lanes of traffic, including four through lanes and one turn lane to serve the local road network.
The current bridge replaced an earlier steel truss structure from 1950 when it was completed in 2002, and the state legislature named it after Edith B. Barill, a former Star City mayor, in 2001. The replacement occurred in phases to keep traffic moving during construction.
The state legislature named the structure Edith B. Barill Bridge in 2001 to commemorate a former Star City mayor.
The bridge handles roughly 29,700 vehicles daily and experiences moderate traffic flow throughout most hours. Visitors should expect typical rush hour congestion in early morning and late afternoon when most commuters travel through the area.
The bridge is equipped with over 700 sensors that monitor vehicle load, speed, traffic counts, and temperature effects, sending research data to West Virginia University. This sensor network turns the structure into an active research laboratory for studying real-world traffic and infrastructure behavior.
