Starrett-Lehigh Building, Office building in Chelsea, Manhattan, US
The Starrett-Lehigh Building is a large office structure in Chelsea that occupies an entire city block, featuring horizontal rows of windows running across 19 floors. The facade alternates between brick and concrete sections, creating a rhythmic pattern that defines the whole structure.
Built in 1931 by the Starrett Corporation and the Lehigh Valley Railroad, this structure replaced the previous freight depot on the site. It incorporated design features from the industrial era that reflected the needs of moving cargo through the building.
Built during an era when factories and warehouses dominated the neighborhood, it still carries marks of that industrial past. The wide windows and solid structure reflect the time when heavy goods moved through this area daily.
The building offers various modern facilities including event spaces, fitness centers, and restaurants accessible to visitors and occupants. Its central location in Chelsea makes it easy to reach and places it near other popular sites throughout the neighborhood.
The building features enormous freight elevators that were originally used to move heavy cargo and now serve as gathering spaces for occupants. These unusually large elevators are a visible reminder of its former purpose as a freight facility.
