Strouse, Adler Company Corset Factory
Strouse, Adler Company Corset Factory, Renaissance Revival industrial complex in New Haven, Connecticut, United States.
The Strouse, Adler Company Corset Factory is a brick building with several interconnected structures in New Haven spanning multiple levels. The various sections range from one to four stories and display Italianate and neo-Classical design features.
The facility started in 1861 as a corset manufacturer and was later taken over by Isaac Strouse and Max Adler, who expanded it into one of the country's major production centers. The operation ran continuously until the final years of the 20th century.
The factory was a major employer in New Haven, drawing workers from nearby communities who gathered daily in its large production halls. It shaped the working life of the city during its decades of operation.
The building is located on Olive Street and can be viewed from the outside to see the architecture and materials. Since it now serves as residential space, access to the interior is limited.
The complex features distinctive stone lintels and sills that frame its window openings across the brick masonry structure. These crafted details reflect the quality built into the construction of such production centers.
