Stone Arabia School
Stone Arabia School is a former schoolhouse built in 1854 in Cicero, New York, displaying Greek Revival style architecture. The rectangular structure with simple lines, wooden walls, and a gabled roof originally served children from grades one through eight taught by a single teacher in one shared room.
Built in 1854, the school originally taught children from grades one through eight from the surrounding area. As larger schools were built nearby, it ceased operations in 1951 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
The school carries the name Stone Arabia, reflecting the historic area where it stands. Visitors can see how important education was to small rural communities and how children of different ages learned together in a single classroom.
The building sits along New York State Route 31 near South Bay Road and is easy to reach. The Cicero Historical Society opens the site on specific weekend days from April through December and welcomes visits by appointment to accommodate individual schedules.
Next to the school stands a historic log cabin from the late 1700s or early 1800s that was originally part of a tavern and built with hand-hewn logs held together by wooden pegs. This structure was carefully dismantled and reconstructed at the historic site in the late 1980s to demonstrate early American building methods.
