Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary

Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary is a protected natural area featuring salt marshes, tidal creeks, and upland zones connected by walking trails. Visitors can observe various bird species from observation platforms and benches positioned along the multiple pathways throughout the site.

The site received its National Natural Landmark designation in 1965, marking the first such recognition in New Jersey. This early protection reflects the long history of conservation efforts at this location.

Educational programs throughout the year inform visitors about bird conservation methods and the importance of maintaining natural environments.

The best viewing opportunities occur during early morning or late afternoon when bird activity is highest. Wear appropriate footwear since some paths may pass through damp areas of the site.

An ancient holly tree over 300 years old grows in the maritime forest zone of the sanctuary on a small rise. This old tree stands as a quiet witness to the long natural history of this place.
