The land started as a Matthews family plantation until 1942, when 40 acres were donated to Cape May County for public recreational purposes.
The zoo maintains species survival programs through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, contributing to global wildlife conservation and education initiatives.
Visitors can access the grounds daily from 7 AM until dusk, with the zoo section operating between 10 AM and 4:30 PM during summer months.
In 2024, the zoo received its largest single donation of 1.4 million dollars from frequent visitor Charles Muller to support animal care programs.
