Swift River Reservation, Protected area in Petersham, Massachusetts, United States.
Swift River Reservation is a protected natural space covering several hundred acres with mixed woodlands, wetlands, and open fields distributed throughout its terrain. The property includes upland areas and varies in elevation along the East Branch of the Swift River corridor.
The land began as Colonial farmland, then underwent intensive logging operations during the 1800s that cleared much of the forest. It was later protected to allow natural forest regeneration and ecosystem recovery.
The reservation contains remnants of early American settlement through preserved cellar holes from former farmsteads scattered throughout the property.
The reservation can be accessed from multiple entry points along local roads and has a well-marked trail system for different activity levels. Visitors should be prepared for varied terrain and potentially wet conditions in the wetland areas.
The landscape displays evidence of historic quarrying where granite was extracted, and active beaver dams have created wetland habitat. These beaver-made ecosystems support wildlife including larger predators more typically found in remote forest regions.
