Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, Wildlife preserve on Devils Lake, Benson County, United States.
White Horse Hill is a wildlife preserve spanning approximately 1,674 acres with mixed grass prairie, marshes, and wooded hills along the southern shore of Devils Lake. The terrain supports multiple habitats connected by trails that guide visitors through the varied landscape.
President Theodore Roosevelt established this area as a National Park in 1904 to protect its natural landscape. In 1931, it transitioned to the National Wildlife Refuge System to ensure ongoing conservation of its animals and habitats.
The name White Horse Hill, adopted in 2019, honors the Spirit Lake Dakota people and their connection to this land. Visitors encounter this recognition throughout the preserve as a sign of respect for those who lived here long ago.
Trails are open year-round, so plan according to the season, as weather changes affect what you see. An on-site visitor center provides information and displays that help you understand the landscape better.
The preserve is home to about 214 bird species, with some appearing only during certain seasons. This bird variety means each visit offers different sights depending on when you come.
